Windows Terminal Preview 1.23 allows new settings through the user interface- Tutorial

Windows Terminal Preview brings Settings from settings.json to User Interface as Version 1.22 Goes Stable

Microsoft has released Windows Terminal Preview version 1.23, their command-line tool for Command Prompt, PowerShell, WSL, and more. This release introduces several new features that allow users to adjust settings through the user interface, particularly affecting display options, compatibility, and profile selection in new tabs. Previously, many of these settings were only configurable through the settings.json file.

New UI Settings Features:

  • The Appearance settings page now includes an option to display a shield icon in the title bar when Windows Terminal runs with admin privileges
  • Users can now enable Acrylic Material in unfocused windows directly through the UI
  • A new Compatibility settings page (also being backported to version 1.22) offers options to:
    • Run Windows Terminal in the background
    • Enable debugging features
    • Modify the text measurement mode (choosing between Grapheme-Cluster, wcswidth, or Windows Console)

Profile Management Improvements:

The new "New Tab Menu" settings page allows users to customize profile selection in new tabs. Since version 1.17, users have been able to customize the profile dropdown menu to reorder profiles or nest them in subfolders. This functionality is now available through the user interface, with support for both arrow controls and drag-and-drop operations.

Accessibility Enhancements:

The update includes several accessibility improvements:

  • Settings UI previews are now readable by screen readers
  • Fixed High Contrast Mode issues in both the settings UI and command palette
  • Improved color contrast for the reset button in settings
  • Enhanced tab contrast colors in High Contrast Mode

Availability:

Windows Terminal can be downloaded from either the Microsoft Store or GitHub repository. A Canary version, offering the newest features but with potential instability, is also available on GitHub. With the release of Preview 1.23, version 1.22 becomes the current stable release.
